In 2020, boxing is no longer fought by humans, but they have been replaced by robots. The former boxer Charlie Kenton drives his truck to promote fights with his robot Ambush. When he has just lost a fight, he is summoned to a hearing and forced to take care of his unknown eleven year-old son Max Kenton since his mother has passed away. Charlie loses another fight with the Noisy Boy robot that his girlfriend Bailey Tallet has just bought and he goes with Max to a junkyard to collect parts of robots to build a new one. However, Max finds an old sparring robot named Atom and Charlie teaches him how to box. Atom becomes a winner and Max and Charlie become closer to each other. I am a Hugh fan of Hugh Jackman (pun was intended. OK, so this review might be a bit biased because of that. But Real Steel is a great movie because it has a balanced mixture of stories of scifi genre, romantic elements, life of a struggling man (a father and lover at that) and fights. It's the year 2020 and human boxing no longer exists due to human beings insatiable taste for increasingly violent blood sports reaching new, unbridled heights. When society wouldn't sanction anything more violent and deadly, the World Robot Boxing league was created to satisfy man's urge for destruction. Here huge, metallic robots battle each other in front of hundreds and thousands of spectators to determine which man, woman or child has created the ultimate, well, killing machine. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a former pro-Boxer and full-time loser, his arrogance and stubbornness is a constant contributing factor towards his failure in life to provide for himself and his friend Bailey (Evangeline Lilly. But when his ex-girlfriend dies and he is left with custody of his eleven year old son Max (Dakota Goyo) he must not only juggle his job as a poor man's robotic boxing coach, but also a young, animated child who understands that the man before him is only his father by blood and nothing more.
Real steel hammer. I am getting goosebumps at many of the emotional scenes, and almost drop a tear at the end when Hugh fights. The ability to do that to me, is an indication of how this movie can delve into your inner soul and touch it lightly.
